Quick answer
No. Vavada is licensed only in Curaçao. Under India’s Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Act, 2025, offering, advertising or facilitating payments for online money games is prohibited. Online casino games and betting for money are not licensable in India at all, so no offshore licence can make Vavada legal there.
| Country | Local licence? | Status | Regulator |
|---|---|---|---|
| India | No (none available for money games) | Illegal – online money games banned under the 2025 Act | Central Government / online gaming authority under the 2025 Act |
Who operates Vavada and which licence it holds
According to the certificate published by the Curaçao Gaming Authority (CGA), the domain VAVADA.COM is operated by Vavada B.V., a company registered in Curaçao under company number 143168. It holds CGA licence OGL/2024/252/0153 to “offer games of chance” under Curaçao’s National Ordinance on Games of Chance (Landsverordening op de kansspelen). When we checked, the certificate showed the status “Active” and a grant date of 9 December 2024.
This is a Curaçao government licence. It lets the company operate from Curaçao, but it does not override the law of the countries where players live. India does not recognise foreign gambling licences.
How to check it yourself: click the CGA seal in the site footer. A genuine seal opens a certificate on cert.cga.cw showing the company name, licence number, status and the exact domain covered. If the address you are using is not listed on that certificate, the licence does not cover it. The CGA also publishes its licensees at portal.gamingcontrolcuracao.org.
We did not check Indian-language mirror domains or apps that use the Vavada name. Apps and “official” Indian sites promoted on social media may not be run by the licensed company at all.
The law in India
In August 2025 Parliament passed the Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Act, 2025. According to PRS Legislative Research’s summary of the bill, it:
- bans offering or aiding online money games – any game where users stake money expecting a monetary return, whether it is based on skill or chance;
- sets penalties of up to 3 years’ imprisonment and/or a fine of up to ₹1 crore for offering such games;
- sets penalties of up to 2 years and/or ₹50 lakh for advertising them;
- sets penalties of up to 3 years and/or ₹1 crore for facilitating financial transactions for them – which covers banks and payment providers;
- provides for an authority to classify and register online games. E-sports and online social games that involve no money stakes are promoted, not banned.
Online casino games (slots, roulette, live dealer) and online sports betting with real money both fall under the definition of online money games. There is therefore no licence Vavada could obtain to serve Indian players.
Is Vavada on an Indian blocklist? India blocks websites through orders that are generally not published as a searchable public list. We could not confirm whether any specific Vavada domain has been blocked, and we do not claim that it has.
What this means for players
- Players are not the target of the criminal penalties. The PRS summary of the Act does not list an offence for individual users who play. The penalties fall on operators, advertisers and those who process payments.
- Payments are the main risk. Because facilitating transactions for online money games is an offence, Indian banks and payment apps are expected to refuse them. Deposits and withdrawals may be blocked, reversed or routed through unknown intermediaries, and funds can be lost.
- No Indian dispute resolution. No Indian authority will handle a complaint against Vavada. The only route is the Curaçao Gaming Authority’s complaints procedure.
- No Indian player protection. Deposit limits, self-exclusion and age checks required in regulated markets do not apply under Indian law, because the activity is prohibited.
- Promoters take legal risk. Influencers, Telegram channels and affiliate sites that advertise Vavada to Indian users may themselves commit the advertising offence.
- Tax. Under Indian tax law, winnings from online games are generally taxable, whether or not the platform is lawful. Ask a tax adviser about your own situation – this article is not tax advice.
How to check any gambling site yourself
- Ask first whether the product is legal at all in India. Real-money online casino and betting are prohibited under the 2025 Act, so any site offering them is operating unlawfully, whatever licence it shows.
- For a foreign licence, click the licence seal and confirm it opens the regulator’s own site, for example cert.cga.cw for Curaçao, and lists the exact domain.
- Be wary of claims such as “legal in India”, “RBI approved” or “government registered” on gambling sites. These claims do not reflect the 2025 Act.
- Check for official government notices on the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology website (meity.gov.in).
- Never download gambling APK files from links shared on social media.
Licensed alternatives
We do not review any real-money casino or betting operator for India, because none can be licensed there under the 2025 Act. If you want to play games legally, stick to free-to-play or e-sports formats with no money stakes. Check official guidance from the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology at meity.gov.in.
How we checked
This article is based on desk research carried out in September 2026. We checked the Curaçao Gaming Authority certificate for vavada.com (cert.cga.cw) and PRS Legislative Research’s summary of the Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Bill, 2025, cross-checked against public reference material on the Act. We did not open an account with Vavada or deposit money.
FAQ
Does Vavada have a licence?
Yes, but only from Curaçao: Vavada B.V., CGA licence OGL/2024/252/0153. That licence has no legal effect in India.
Is it legal to play at Vavada in India?
No. The Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Act, 2025 prohibits online money games, including casino games and betting. Vavada cannot lawfully offer them to Indian users.
Will I be punished for playing?
According to the PRS summary, the Act’s penalties target operators, advertisers and payment facilitators, not individual players. You still risk losing deposits and winnings, and you have no legal protection.
Why do my UPI or card payments to Vavada fail?
Facilitating payments for online money games is an offence under the 2025 Act, so Indian banks and payment providers are expected to block them.
Can I complain to an Indian regulator if Vavada does not pay?
No. No Indian authority oversees Vavada. The only option is the Curaçao Gaming Authority’s complaints procedure, which offers limited protection.
